Getting Rid of the Old Rust Bucket
Well, the old Rust Bucket has been around for so many years, and although our
now grown-up kids keep nagging us to remove the junk car already, well- it's
just really hard. It's hard to let go of something that holds so many memories
from all those years of family vacations with the little ones who are now
parents themselves. Photos are nice reminders, but there's nothing like
something tangible- an old car, for instance.
And, this is not just any old junk car; this is a trusted old car friend that
drove to and from the hospital when Marty, Sarah, and David were born. It drove
cross-country to bring the kids to sleep-away camp and it carpooled to and from
Pompton Grade School, where all the kids received a top-notch education. And
this is the same car that was witness to hundreds of ''car games'' - like
counting license plates from different states and singing songs that start with
the letter ''R''… You name it, and it happened in that old car friend of ours.
But lately, our children just keep nagging us to get rid of it. We keep asking
them why it's so important to get rid of something that is so precious to us. I
mean, people keep all sorts of antiques, heirlooms, objects of sentimental
value- why should this be any different?
Marty said something the other day about recycling and helping the environment
so that the grandkids will have healthy air to breathe. Sarah keeps sending me
these ads about free junk car towing, junk car removal, and the like. I know
that they found this company that will dispose of the cars in ways that are
healthy for the environment, at least that's what Sarah says. The truth is, I'm
not much of a ''Save the Earth'' kind of person, but my daughter is- and when
she starts bringing the grandkids into all of this, well, that kind of gets to
my heart a little bit…
